“Don’t Buy” warning for three children’s strollers.

April 17th, 2010

The consumer watchdog group says the strollers pose a safety risk to children.

The directive comes after the strollers failed Consumer Reports testing.

The three strollers that Consumer Reports is saying don’t buy are, the Valco Baby Tri-Mode, Tike Tech City x3 All-Terrain Stroller and the Tike Tech x3 Sport Jogging Stroller.

The problem is something many parents might not be aware of.

“The danger here is if the child’s torso slips underneath the bar but the head gets hung up,” explained Consumer Reports

The American Society for Testing and Materials requires that if there is enough space for the child’s body to pass underneath the stroller tray or grab bar, then there must be enough space for a child’s head to pass through as well.

Consumer Reports tested the strollers using a ball to represent a child’s head.

“This ball should pass through underneath that bar under its own weight. It doesn’t so it fails to comply with the industry standards,” said Consumer Reports.

So far, the manufacturers of the strollers in question say they have received no reports of any injuries involving their strollers.

Consumer Reports says it will pass its findings on to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Sleeping Baby Safety – Bassinet, Crib…

March 30th, 2010

I would like to share with you the article that I read lately, related to infant’s deaths in US.
I wrote many articles about this important topic and think that parents could learn from this one too…

“African American infant mortality is much higher than Caucasian infant mortality across the United States,” says Jenifer Cartland, PhD, director of the research center’s Child Health Data Lab. “In Cook County, IL. sleep-related death is responsible for 20 percent of the African American infant mortality, but it might be prevented by assuring that all infants have a safe place to sleep and that parents are well educated about safe sleep practices.”

Karen Sheehan, MD, MPH at Children’s Memorial says, “The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children should be put to sleep on their backs, in a safety-approved crib (or bassinet for younger children) with a firm mattress, and free from any objects (even blankets or toys) that could cover the baby’s face.”

Parents don’t always have all the knowledge or all the resources they need to put their infant to bed safely. Based on the research, 56.7 percent of the deaths occurred while the infant was sharing a bed with an adult and 30 percent occurred when the baby was sleeping alone, but not in a crib or bassinet (such as on a couch or a pillow on the floor). Few of these infants — only 7.5 percent – were found in safe sleep circumstances, that is, in a crib or bassinet with the baby on his or her back.

Bicycle Trailers – Recommendations

March 30th, 2010

Bicycle TrailerIt is important that your baby is safe at all times, especially when you take him on the road in the bicycle trailer. I realized that is never to much to read about safety, new rules, and recommendations, if we are talking about our childrens safety.
That’s why I write a lot about these topics and hope that you make them useful and practical for your family.

- Don’t buy a bicycle trailer or a bicycle-mounted seat until your baby is at least 1 year old. It is not recommend for children younger than that because they may not be physically equipped to withstand the forces they’ll be exposed to when riding in a bicycle seat or trailer. And when they’re younger than age 1, they can’t support their head properly with a helmet on, which all riders should wear.

- Choose based on your needs, riding ability, and where you are riding. Trailers are “off-road vehicles”; use them only in parks and on safe, smooth trails where there’s no risk of encounters with cars.
- Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for bicycle trailer, regarding the maximum weight, which is usually up to 100 pounds.

- The better bicycle trailers have sturdy construction, tinted windows, a comfortable interior, and a wide wheel base. But before you buy, ask yourself if you will use the trailer enough to justify the price. If you think you’ll use it only occasionally, buy the most durable trailer you can find at the low-end price.
- Consider how much weight you’ll tow. If the weight of the bicycle trailer plus the passenger or passengers exceeds 50 pounds, you may start to feel like a beast of burden. Pedaling uphill can be especially difficult. At that point, maybe it’s time for riders to get their own bikes.

- Take your cycling ability into consideration. If you opt for a bicycle-mounted seat, you might find a rear-mounted seat with a child in tow unnerving and exhausting to operate. If you’re a novice or not in top shape, you’d probably be better off with a front-mounted seat. If you go with a bicycle trailer, ride with only one child at a time if you’re an infrequent rider.
- Finally, have your child wear a lightweight, well-fitting bike helmet, and never leave a child in the seat with the bike on the kick stand, which isn’t made to support the weight.

Toronto Woman Arrested for Stealing Baby Strollers

March 26th, 2010

Hopefully baby stroller stealers don’t go away for long with their crimes! Police pays attention and usually strollers owners help a lot with catching these law breakers. It is obvious that stolen baby strollers will be put on sale somewhere and Craigslist is very popular destination for these strollers.

Toronto police have arrested a woman who is wanted for allegedly stealing a baby stroller that was posted on Craigslist.

Emma Luck, 22, was charged on Tuesday with 12 counts of theft under $5,000. Luck, along with 25-year-old Michael Pavlova, allegedly stole high-end strollers from their victims’ front porches.

The owner of the $750 stroller, Lindsay Taylor, had it stolen on March 13, and found it for sale on the Craigslist website a day later. He staged a sting to get the stroller back.

Taylor and a friend met up with the seller in a parking lot and took pictures of him along with a woman with him.

He took the stroller back and said that he recognized it from the chalk marks made on it by his son.

Police say that Pavlova is wanted for theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by a crime.

Police issued an alert last October in one area of the city advising parents to keep strollers inside or locked up due to a rash of thefts.

So parents keep your baby strollers inside or lock them! if you don’t want to purchase them again on Craigslist!

Baby Stroller Stealers Wanted in Toronto

March 24th, 2010
Manhattan Beach Police tracked down baby stroller stealers lately and they ended up in the custody.
Hopefully stealers from Toronto will end up similar way…

When a Toronto man’s pricey stroller was stolen last weekend he turned to Craigslist to find a new one, only to find that the thieves had listed his own Bugaboo the very next day.

Toronto, Canada – On Saturday the victim’s baby stroller was stolen. On Sunday he found it for sale on Craigslist. On Monday police responded to the victim’s call after he had made contact with the thieves and taken their pictures. Michael Pavlova, 25, is wanted for theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000. A second suspect is also wanted. She is described as a white woman with short, brown hair with blonde streaks. Constable Isabelle Cotton said during a phone interview that these strollers are the “Cadillac of strollers.” “We have had a lot of trouble with people stealing these strollers in Toronto. There is a big market for the parts and the strollers themselves. I own one personally and always keep it with me,” Cotton added, “You can’t just leave this high-end stroller when you go into a store.”

So, parents, when you planning to visit Toronto, and baby stroller will be one of your accessories, keep an eye on it!
Especially very expensive baby strollers are the cases, and they don’t have lo jacks to track them…

Stealing Baby Strollers in Manhattan Beach

March 19th, 2010

If you live near Manhattan Beach – WATCH YOUR BABY STROLLER!
There were many cases of stealing baby strollers, especially those expensive ones. We read these stories from time to time. Now it happens again near Manhattan Beach.
A man and a woman are behind bars for allegedly stealing several baby strollers, bicycles, and motorized scooters, police said.
Anthony Michael Taraszka, 33, and Michelle Renee Thompson, 31, were taken into custody after police found 16 high-end strollers, 23 bicycles, and some motorized scooters in their residence after a probation search, according to Sgt. Brian Brown of the Manhattan Beach Police Department.

The majority of the thefts occurred in and around Manhattan Beach and its neighboring cities.

So, parents, our baby strollers are not safe, when left alone. It could happen everywhere. I read that in Canada, stealing baby strollers are very common cases. Be aware, when planning to visit Canada, and the baby stroller will be one of your accessories that you taking with you.

Are baby slings safe?

March 14th, 2010

If you are one of the parents that loves to use baby slings, maybe you  see more benefits then hazards, you should read this article.
I know parents who think that baby slings are the best way to bond with their newborns and use them anyway.

A federal safety commission on Friday issued a warning for baby-carrying slings, blaming them for three infant deaths in 2009.

Some sling manufacturers, however, opposed the warning, saying it could hurt their business and argued the slings are safe if used properly.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said slings have been associated with at least 14 infant deaths over the last 20 years. Most of the babies who died were under four months old and had either a low birth weight, were born prematurely, or had breathing issues such as a cold, the commission reported.

Slings are made from cloth and wrap around a parent’s body, allowing them to carry a baby close on the chest, back, or hip.

The commission said the slings pose a suffocation hazard. The fabric can block a baby’s breathing, resulting in death within a minute, it reported. And if the sling keeps the baby in a curled position, the airway can be restricted, rendering the baby unable to cry while suffocation occurs, the commission said.

It recommended that parents and caregivers who use a sling make sure the baby’s face is visible, the chin upright, and that the baby isn’t pressed up against the body. Babies should be checked frequently, it added.

The commission said it is currently developing a safety standard for all slings.

I wrote a few articles about baby slings, benefits, safety issues, and concerns.
I hope, again, that the information helps baby slings users, at least parents can use some above mentioned safety tips to prevent injuries or even infants deaths.
I will inform you on my blog, when the safety standards for baby slings will be made.
